What can Physical Activity do for me?
Physical Activity can help to manage our #pain and #chronic #medical conditions, increase our balance and our #proprioception (a fancy word to know where our body is in time... just like closing our eyes and knowing our arm's position and where it moves and how it can reach out and tap our nose or touch our lips).

Exercise helps us to improve our #core #stability and #posture it may even help us to correct our #gait (a fancy word for the way we walk). What if I have barriers to exercise?
It is okay! Life gets busy! We all journey on the roller coaster of life's ups and downs. We may prescribe home-based exercises for you, they may be as simple as going for a walk or jog by the beach or park. As easy as this sounds for some... sometimes we experience obstacles (a fancy word for the lack of resources and time to exercise, support or motivation, injury and energy). It is okay to experience obstacles. It is okay to ask for help.
This is when we can truly utilise a professional to guide us through safe, fun and effective exercises.

What is the difference between an exercise physiologist and a physiotherapist?
We sound similar in the health industry as we help to optimise movement and function however we differ in the following ways. Physiotherapist can provide injury diagnosis and prognosis, whereas exercise physiologists may receive a diagnosis and provide rehabilitation programs, including lifestyle changes with education and behaviour modification. Physiotherapists provide ‘hands on’ treatment (e.g. joint manipulation and mobilisation, acupuncture and massage) while exercise physiologists provide ‘hands off’ treatment by implementing clinical exercise programs.
ESSA.org.au answers our question... AEPs are university qualified allied health professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Pathology domains covered by the services of AEPs include cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, musculoskeletal, cancers, kidney, respiratory / pulmonary and mental health, and any other conditions for which there is evidence that exercise can improve the client’s clinical status.
Who is Exercise Science Sports Science Australia (ESSA)?
Exercise & Sports Science Australia is our peak professional body and sole accrediting authority for Accredited Exercise Physiologists. ESSA is also the accrediting body for Accredited Exercise Scientists, Accredited Sports Scientists and Accredited High Performance Managers. To gain AEP accreditation with ESSA an individual must Graduate from a minimum 4 years of study in an ESSA accredited course. If AEPs meet the professional standards for exercise science, they can be dual accredited as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES). AEP's must meet the professional standards for exercise physiology, including 360 hours of practical experience with clients with clinical conditions (eg. cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological). To maintain accreditation with ESSA, an AEP is required to Hold and maintain a valid first aid and CPR certificate and continue Professional Development.
What do you do at Mia's Health?
We Prescribe Exercise & facilitate programs for #Elite #Athletes. We help to improve overall individual #health and #wellbeing especially in special population groups such as children, special needs, seniors and maternal health during and after pregnancy. We #rehabilitate after surgery and we #treat chronic illness with regular physical activity.
We support those living with a disability and we provide services with the #NDIS. You can access accredited physiology services through NDIS Funding, under the Improved Health and Wellbeing and Improved Daily Living category.
Our service may include assessments, therapy sessions, home- based exercise programs, training of carers, family and support workers, exercise equipment prescription, group exercise and community programs.

We provide #AgedCare services to improve confidence and self-efficacy, improve your social life and manage physical changes that come with ageing such as reduced bone density, decreased strength, flexibility and loss of mobility.
We deliver services to prepare for surgery and deliver rehabilitation to regain strength, flexibility, movement and endurance.
We treat chronic conditions such as Obesity, Heart Disease, Hypertension (a fancy word for high blood pressure), chronic pain, fibromyalgia, depression, stroke, cancer, COPD, arthritis, anxiety, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis.
We love corporate health and team up with our friends at Kinex to provide corporate health activities and health checks.
We see Metabolic conditions including but not limited to overweight and obesity, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidaemias (acquired and familial), Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, sleep apnoea, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

What do they teach you at University?
We are trained to understand medical conditions, injuries and limitations, more than a health coach or a personal trainer, an exercise physiologist has detailed knowledge of how the body works and operates.
We study our bodies in intricate detail over 4 years. We learn about biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, histology, psychology, biology, pharmacology, nutrition, bio-mechanics and more so that we can scientifically prescribe the best individualised exercise program for you!
What shall I expect from our initial consult?
In our Initial Consultation, we shall perform an:
1. Assessment of your medical history and lifestyle (which may include assessing your levels of physical inactivity, nutrition and identifying risk factors for developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease). When we understand you and your needs we help you to achieve your goals safely and effectively.
2. Assessment of your functional abilities,
3. Evaluation of risk factors
4. Identification of barriers to exercise.
